The Experience: What to Expect

Step back in time to Victorian Radstock with an exclusive, immersive experience at Somerset Coalfield Life at Radstock Museum. Our expert guides from the Museum’s Education Team will give you a tour of the Museum when it is closed to the general public.

Dressed in character as a miner, a shopkeeper or a school teacher our guides will bring the past to life and guide you through the daily realities of life on the Somerset coalfield. Step into our recreated shop to find out what was on sale. Find out why the blacksmith didn’t just shoe horses but was essential for every coal mine. Learn about the harsh realities of life underground. Experience a ‘lesson’ in a Victorian school room.

During your visit you will have the opportunity to see and handle authentic historical artefacts and try your hand at traditional Victorian tasks. Then relax and enjoy light refreshments and a chat in the Museum’s tea room.

Welcome to the Co-op shop

The Museum is fully accessible and there is no need to use the stairs. Extra seating can be provided in each area if required.
